* SPELLING - Every student in Studio 3 has Spelling words in the front of their notebooks. Highlighted words are words your child has mastered. If you are needing more Spelling words to continue with at home, please let me know. :)
* READING - Readers/Junior Journals are sent home Monday - Thursday and library books on a Thursday.
* MATHS - 'Maths Champion' is in the students notebooks. You may also like to practice/revise basic facts to 5, 10 and then to 20.

Autumn Haiku Poems

The bears hibernate.

Golden leaves follow the wind.

Some leaves stay on trees.

Squirrels hibernate in trees.

Term 1, Week 6 Poem

Chelsey did a wonderful job of making her poem bright and beautiful this week. Great rainbow colours.

Cows in The Paddock
Activity:
1. Show the students the cows (counters x 10) and the 2 pieces of paper (that represent paddocks). Explain to the students that the farmer has a group of cows and 2 paddocks to keep them in.
2. Ask: How many cows does the farmer have?
3. Confirm by counting that there are 10 cows.
4. Ask: If the farmer has 2 cows in one paddock, how many cows will be in the other paddock?
5. Place two cows in one paddock and eight cows in the other paddock. Confirm by counting that there are 8 cows in the second paddock.
6. Clearly state the number fact: There are 2 cows in this paddock and 8 cows in this paddock, there are 10 cows altogether.
7. Ask: How else could the farmer arrange the cows between the two paddocks?
8. Identify all of the possible arrangements (1/9, 2/8, 3/7, 4/6, 5/5, 0/10) and for each example clearly state the related number fact.
Extension: This activity can be repeated using twenty cows to help learn groupings within 20.

Reading Comprehension

Reading Comprehension
These three types of questions are usually linked to a passage of text, in order to either help a student learn, or to assess comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Consider this text: Sarah was delighted in the crunch and crackle of the red, orange and yellow leaves under her feet as she walked home from school, but she failed to look both ways before crossing the street.
1. An inferential question can't be answered by looking at the text itself, but can be answered by inference or reference to some outside information. An example of an inferential question for the above text is, "What season was it?" (Autumn).
2. A literal question can be answered solely by referencing the text itself. An example of a literal question for the above text is, "What colors were the leaves?" (Red, orange and yellow).
3. An applied knowledge question uses the knowledge they've gained from the book to give an overall judgement.
